The catalyst isn't just a filter — it's part of the control loop. Change it and the software's assumptions break.

The ECU polices the catalyst constantly. A lambda sensor before it and another after compare oxygen content; the difference tells the ECU the cat is converting as designed. Remove the catalyst — or fit a high-flow core the factory thresholds don't recognise — and the downstream sensor starts telling a story the software flags as failure: efficiency codes, warning lights, and on many cars altered fuelling as the ECU retreats into protective defaults. The exhaust flows better and the car runs worse.

The proper fix is calibration, not concealment. We rebuild the lambda monitoring strategy around the fitted hardware, recalibrate fuelling for the new flow regime — freer-breathing exhausts shift mixture behaviour, especially at load — and reshape the torque structure to use what the pipe now allows. On turbocharged cars a decat or sports cat noticeably improves spool and top-end breathing, and the calibration is where that potential becomes drivable performance. No O2-sensor eraser hacks, no fault-masking — those bodges break fuelling corrections you actually want alive.

And the legality, plainly: a full decat is illegal on UK roads, fails the MOT's emissions and visual checks, and lives here strictly as a motorsport, track and export calibration with a signed declaration. Quality sports cats are a more nuanced conversation — many fit within emissions limits on the right car while freeing most of the flow — and we'll give you the honest per-car version of that conversation before anything is ordered or flashed, including "keep the stock cat" when that's the truthful answer.

Asked Before The Pipe Comes Off

Actually illegal for UK road use: removing the catalyst breaches emissions regulations, fails the MOT on both the emissions test and the visual inspection, and can attract fines and insurance consequences on top. That's why full-decat calibrations here are strictly for track, competition and export vehicles with a signed declaration. It's a genuine motorsport service, not a wink-wink one.

A quality 200-cell sports cat passes the emissions test on many cars — it still converts, just with less restriction — but it's a per-car answer that depends on the engine, its tune and the cat's quality. The bargain-bin cores mostly don't. Before you spend, tell us the car and the candidate hardware and we'll give you the honest probability rather than a brochure answer.

On naturally-aspirated cars: modest — a few horsepower and a sharper note. On turbocharged engines: meaningful, because the catalyst sits exactly where back-pressure costs spool; freed flow brings boost earlier and supports more at the top. The real gains arrive when the calibration uses the headroom — hardware alone moves the dyno needle far less than hardware plus matched software.

We can do much better than that. "Turning it off" with eraser hacks or spacers leaves the fuelling corrections degraded; we recalibrate the lambda monitoring strategy properly so the light stays off because the software's expectations match the hardware — and the upstream control loop keeps fuelling the engine accurately. Off-road/track builds only, declaration signed, done once, done right.

It usually arrives as part of one — decat hardware is a classic Stage 2 ingredient alongside intake and intercooler work, and one calibration written for the whole package beats two written separately. Louder, certainly — the catalyst is a significant silencer — but how much depends on the rest of the system: a decat into a well-silenced cat-back is characterful rather than antisocial, while decat plus straight-through boxes is track-day-only territory (and many circuits enforce noise limits, which is worth checking before you build).
