Manufacturers build one gearbox and sell it at five aggression levels. The difference between them is a calibration file.

The transmission in your car is almost certainly shared with something faster. The same DSG that dawdles in a diesel estate launches a hot hatch at 4,000 rpm; the same ZF eight-speed that glides in a luxury saloon snaps shifts in an M car. Hardware identical, calibration different. What you're missing isn't engineering — it's permission, withheld for market positioning, warranty caution and the comfort of the median customer.

Gearbox feature tuning grants that permission, deliberately. Launch control enabled and configured for your engine's character. Shift points moved so Sport mode earns its name and Drive stops short-shifting into hesitation. The TCU's torque limiter raised within the clutch hardware's real capability — the fix for remapped cars that feel inexplicably flat in-gear. Kickdown logic rewritten so the gearbox answers your right foot instead of debating it.

Enabled where the hardware supports it, with launch rpm set for your engine — repeatable, consistent starts.

Brake and throttle together, revs hold at the calibrated point, release and go — boost pre-built, both clutches managed. We set the hold rpm for your engine's boost character, not a generic number: enough to launch hard, not enough to slip the clutches into an early retirement.

Upshift and downshift thresholds moved to match how the car is actually driven — and what it actually makes.

Factory Drive upshifts early for emissions cycles; factory Sport often holds gears in theatrical, useless places. We move both to the engine's real torque window — particularly transformative on remapped cars whose powerband the factory shift map has never met.

The TCU's in-gear torque caps lifted within verified clutch capability — delivery stops being silently trimmed.

Gearboxes protect themselves per-gear: many cars get full torque in fourth but a clipped version in second. Raising these caps — against adaptation data, never blindly — is often the single cheapest performance gain available to an already-remapped automatic.

The pause between asking for an overtake and receiving one — engineered out.

Factory kickdown filters your input through hesitation logic designed to avoid startling anyone. We sharpen the thresholds so a firm pedal gets gears immediately — the difference between committing to an overtake and aborting one.

Paddles that mean it — your gear held properly instead of overridden at the first excuse.

Where the gearbox generation allows, Manual mode is calibrated to hold your chosen gear to the limiter and execute paddle requests without second-guessing. Over-rev protection stays active — discipline for the gearbox, not danger for the engine.

Not every gearbox supports every feature

Launch control on a dry-clutch DQ200 is a different proposition to a wet-clutch DQ381; some torque-converter autos expose almost nothing. Anyone promising the full menu universally is improvising.

Every launch is controlled clutch slip. Used sensibly it's fine; used six times in a supermarket car park it's heat the clutch pack will remember.

Features can't fix a tired transmission

If the box already shudders, slips or thumps into gear, new shift points just rearrange the symptoms. Mechanical condition comes first.

Feature Questions, Answered

No — and that's the honest answer that separates this page from some others. Wet-clutch DSGs (DQ250, DQ381, DQ500) and many modern autos support it well; some dry-clutch and older torque-converter units expose limited or no launch logic. Your reg identifies the exact transmission, and we confirm support before any booking or payment. Where it's not available, we'll say so in plain words.

A single-feature calibration — for example launch control enabling and setup, or a shift-point recalibration — including the health check, original file backup, road-test verification and written record. Combining features costs less than booking them separately, and the full DSG remap at £150 includes the whole menu where supported, which is why we often recommend it once you want two or more.

Very possibly. The TCU runs per-gear torque caps, and an engine remap doesn't change them — so your engine makes the new number while the gearbox delivers the old one in second and third. Raising those caps within the clutch pack's verified capability releases delivery you already paid for. It's one of our most satisfying jobs: the dyno sheet finally matches the seat.

Calibrated within hardware capability on a healthy, serviced transmission — no. Torque caps are raised against adaptation evidence, launch rpm is set conservatively, and every protection model stays active. The real long-term risks are heat and old oil, which is why service history is part of the booking conversation and why we'll decline a tired gearbox rather than tune it.

No — shift points, kickdown and launch control transform how a completely stock car feels to drive. The torque-limiter raise is the one feature that mostly benefits remapped engines. If you're stock and tempted by everything, the Stage 1 + DSG bundle does both sides in one visit and is the better-value route to the full experience.

Both. Your original TCU file is archived for life and the transmission can return to factory behaviour whenever you ask. On insurance: it's a modification and should be declared like any other — the written record we hand over makes that a two-minute phone call rather than an awkward conversation.
