Soft Cut, Hard Cut,
And Why It Matters

The difference is how the engine says no at the redline — politely, or like a rally car.

A factory limiter is a diplomat: approaching the redline it tapers torque away — softening ignition, trimming fuel — so the engine just goes mushy and quiet at the top. Safe, refined, and on a track car genuinely annoying: that fade costs crisp pace at the limiter and gives the driver nothing to hear or feel. A hardcut replaces the taper with a clean fuel cut at the set rpm: full power right up to the wall, then the unmistakable mechanical stutter — bang-bang-bang — until you shift. It's how competition engines have done it for decades, because at racing pace a limiter you can hear is information.

The launch limiter applies the same thinking to standing starts. Off the line, a secondary rev cap holds the engine at a calibrated speed — typically around 3,000–3,500 rpm on a turbo car — letting boost build against the cut so you leave with the turbo already working instead of waiting for it. Every launch identical, every pass repeatable: that consistency is the entire point, whether the venue is a drag strip, a hillclimb start line or a private test day.

Both are calibrated per car, not copy-pasted: cut rpm set with respect for your valvetrain's real limits, launch rpm matched to your turbo and clutch, and every temperature and over-rev protection left fully armed underneath. The honest caveats ride along too — a hardcut is mechanically harsher than a fade by design, it's loud in a way regulations notice, and it belongs on the declared track and off-road builds we supply it for. Raising a rev limit is a valvetrain conversation, not a vanity number: spring rates, lifter design and rod maths set the real ceiling. We raise only what the engine's hardware supports — and refuse the requests physics refuses first.

Too low and you launch off-boost; too high and every start is a clutch funeral. The sweet spot depends on turbo size, clutch type and tyre — set per car, tested on the day, adjustable when the build changes.

Bouncing off a hardcut for thirty seconds is a turbo-warming exercise with consequences. The calibration limits the worst of it and the handover covers the rest: use the theatre in bursts, and the hardware stays friends with you.

A hardcut changes how the limiter behaves, never whether the engine is protected. Every supervisory strategy stays live — when conditions turn hostile, the ECU still wins, which is precisely how a track engine survives its owner's best days.

Asked Before The Stutter

How the engine is stopped at the limit. Soft cut tapers torque away over the last few hundred rpm — smooth, quiet, and slightly vague to drive against. Hardcut interrupts fuelling cleanly at the set speed: full power until the exact wall, then the rapid-fire stutter as the engine bounces against the cut. Competition engines use it because it's precise and audible; track drivers love it for the same reasons.

Used as designed — brief, at the top of real driving — no: the cut is a fuel interruption with every protection strategy still live underneath. Abused — held against the limiter for theatrical half-minutes — it accelerates valvetrain, driveline and turbo wear, which is true of any limiter activity and more true of a hard one. We calibrate to your hardware's tolerance and brief you honestly; the engine's longevity is then a usage decision you make informed.

Where the valvetrain genuinely supports it, yes — modest raises are common on engines with headroom. But the ceiling is mechanical: valve springs, lifters and rod maths set limits no software should argue with, and "another 500 rpm" on the wrong engine is how float becomes contact. We'll tell you what your engine's hardware honestly allows, and set the cut there or below.

No — and it matters. This service is the ECU-side launch limiter for manual cars. Dual-clutch cars do launch control properly through the gearbox's own computer, managing both clutches and torque together — that's our DSG / TCU remap, and it's the right tool for your car. Same goal, different computer; we'll point you at the correct booking from your reg.

At the cut: genuinely loud — sharper and angrier than any factory behaviour, with intensity scaling with your exhaust's freedom. A stock-exhaust car gives a muffled stutter; a decat track car gives the full rally-stage experience, including for postcodes you didn't intend to share it with. That's why it's a declared track and off-road calibration — and why many circuits' noise limits are worth checking before a track day.

Always. Your original file is archived for life, so full return to the factory soft cut is one short visit — before selling, before a quieter chapter, whenever. Intensity adjustments are equally simple: plenty of customers run the full setting for a season and mellow it afterwards. The calibration serves the build's life, not the other way round.
