Carmakers build one electronics platform for the world, then enable features by market and trim. The switches are still there.

Why does a German-market car get cornering fog lights your identical UK car doesn't? Because somewhere in a product-planning meeting, a spreadsheet said so. The hardware is the same, the software is the same — a parameter in a module simply reads "off" instead of "on". Trim levels work the same way: plenty of "premium" features are the base car's electronics with more permissions granted.

Coding flips those parameters using the same official frameworks dealers use — no hacked firmware, no bodged wiring, no third-party boxes spliced into looms. Feature lists circulate online for "your" model that actually describe a different year, market or equipment level. Cornering fogs need fog lights; auto-fold needs powered mirrors.

The Questions Before The Unlocks

Done properly, yes — we're changing configuration parameters the manufacturer built, using the same frameworks dealers use, with every module backed up before changes. The horror stories almost always involve cheap cables, cracked software and interrupted writes. Process is the whole difference: backup, change within valid values, verify, document.

Usually — coded parameters typically persist through routine servicing. A full module software update or reflash at a dealer can reset configurations to delivery state, though it's the exception rather than the rule. Because every change is on your record, re-applying your setup after an update is a quick, cheap revisit rather than a rediscovery project.

Honest answer: coding is detectable in principle, and a dealer could note non-delivery configuration — though comfort and lighting preferences very rarely raise eyebrows, and everything we do is reversible in minutes before a visit if you'd rather. Insurance-wise, enabling factory features sits in a much milder category than performance modification, but if in doubt, declare — and our written record makes that easy.
