Every modern turbocharged engine ships with performance held in reserve. Manufacturers calibrate one engine for dozens of markets — for 91-octane fuel, for extreme climates, for owners who skip services, and for the marketing department's neat power-output ladder. That safety margin is real, it is generous, and on UK fuel in a healthy engine, a large slice of it is simply unused.

A Finish Line Stage 1 remap claims that margin back properly. We connect to your ECU, read the factory calibration, and rewrite the maps that govern boost pressure, fuelling, ignition or injection timing and the torque-limiting structure — as one coherent system, tuned to your exact engine code, gearbox and fuel. The file is built for your car, not downloaded for "a Golf".

Crucially, every factory protection stays armed. Knock control, overboost cuts, temperature protection and limp-home logic all remain exactly as the manufacturer designed them. That is the entire philosophy of Stage 1: use the engineering headroom, never the safety net. Target boost raised within the turbo's efficient operating range — more airflow, more torque, no strain spikes.

We adjust the boost target and wastegate control maps together so the turbo works inside its compressor map, where it is efficient and unstressed. Cheap tunes chase peak numbers by over-spinning the turbo; ours holds a stronger, flatter curve at pressures the hardware was engineered to live with.

Fuel delivery recalculated to match the new airflow, keeping mixtures safe under full load.

More air needs precisely more fuel. We rescale injection so the air-fuel ratio stays where the engine makes clean, cool, safe power — with injector duty headroom preserved. Lean-running "economy hacks" and over-rich soot cannons are both signs of a file written by someone else.

Timing advanced only where your engine's knock margin allows — efficiency without the gamble.

On petrol we advance ignition where there is verified knock margin on UK 95/99 RON; on diesel we optimise injection timing and duration for a stronger, cleaner burn. The factory knock-control system stays fully active as the permanent safety layer underneath our calibration.

The chain of torque caps between pedal and wheels raised as one — this is where "remap feel" really lives.

Modern ECUs are torque-based: dozens of limiters decide what you are allowed, gear by gear. We raise the structure coherently — keeping gearbox and driveline protection values sensible — which is why the result feels muscular and effortless rather than spiky and artificial.

Factory pedal maps add a deliberate dead zone for "smoothness". We tighten the relationship between your foot and delivered torque as part of the whole file — not as a plug-in pedal-box trick that just lies to the throttle sensor and calls it tuning.

Every factory safeguard — knock control, overboost cut, temperature protection, limp mode — left fully armed.

The fastest way to spot a dangerous tune is to look at what it deletes. We delete nothing. If a sensor reads wrong or temperatures climb, your car protects itself exactly as the manufacturer intended. Stage 1 uses the headroom, never the safety net.

A remap is a modification. Not declaring it risks a refused claim — and anyone who tells you "they'll never know" is gambling with your money.

Asked Before Every Booking

Not when it is written properly for a healthy engine. Stage 1 works inside the manufacturer's own engineering tolerances and leaves every factory protection system — knock control, overboost cuts, temperature limits, limp mode — fully active. That is also why we health-check every car before flashing: software headroom is for healthy engines, and we confirm yours is one before we touch it.

It depends entirely on your engine. Turbo diesels typically gain 25–35% more torque; turbo petrols typically gain 15–30% more power. Honest answer: sometimes, yes. Main dealers can detect that the ECU has been flashed even after a return to stock, and we will never tell you otherwise. What we guarantee is that your original file is archived for life, so the car can go back to 100% factory software before any dealer visit — which in practice resolves the overwhelming majority of situations.

Yes — a remap is a modification and must be declared, and we put that in writing rather than in small print. You leave with a written spec sheet describing exactly what was done, which makes the declaration a two-minute phone call. Specialist insurers handle declared remaps routinely and often price them very reasonably.

Driven normally, most cars match or slightly beat their old MPG after a Stage 1 — the extra mid-range torque means less throttle and fewer downshifts to do the same job.
