Anyone can screw an aftermarket camera to a tailgate. Making the car display it, steer-line it and self-diagnose it — that's the craft.

There are two ways to add a feature to a modern car. The aftermarket way: a universal kit, a screen stuck to the dash, wiring teed into circuits it was never designed for, and a result that works alongside the car rather than with it. And the OEM way: the hardware the factory would have fitted, on the connectors the loom already expected, coded into the modules so the car recognises, displays and diagnoses it like it was born there. We only do the second kind.

The difference shows everywhere. A retrofitted factory camera appears on your existing screen with moving guidelines. Retrofitted cruise lives on a proper factory stalk or wheel buttons. Towbar electrics announce the trailer to the stability control, which changes its behaviour accordingly — because the car knows. When hardware is integrated at module level, it inherits the factory's self-diagnosis too: a future fault logs a proper code instead of just quietly dying.

Every project starts with build-data research from your reg: what the platform supports, which part numbers fit your production window, what the coding route looks like. You get a fixed quote covering parts, fitting and integration before anything is ordered — and "this platform can't do that properly" as a straight answer when it's true, because a retrofit that half-works is a disservice at any price.

Most cars sold without cruise have everything but the switchgear and the permission. A genuine stalk plus coding is frequently all it takes — one of the best value-per-pound retrofits on the menu, and it works exactly like the factory option because it is one.

OEM sensor sets integrated with the car's own displays and tones — not a beeper box under the bumper.

Factory-correct sensors, colour-coded, on the proper control module — so distances show on your screen, tones come through the car's speakers, and the system self-diagnoses. Indistinguishable from a car built with them, which is the whole point.

Dedicated towing modules coded in — trailer detection, stability programmes, sensor muting all active.

Bypass relays are the bodge that bites later. A dedicated module coded to the car activates the factory towing logic: trailer stability control, rear-sensor muting, bulb-failure monitoring for the trailer. This is the difference between wiring and integration.

Platform sharing means the upgrade screen or virtual cockpit from the top trim often connects straight to your loom — the work is in component protection, pairing and coding the unit to believe it's yours. Not everything retrofits economically

Some features need so many supporting modules that the parts bill dwarfs the benefit. Adaptive cruise on a car with no radar prep can be a four-figure rabbit hole.

Every project starts the same way: reg plus wishlist, and you get feasibility and a fixed quote back. The research costs nothing.

Project Questions, Answered

Send the reg and the feature you're after. We pull the build data — platform generation, fitted modules, wiring prep — and check it against the retrofit's requirements. Some cars have the loom and brackets already waiting (manufacturers pre-wire more than you'd think); others need more support. Either way you get a definitive yes/no with a fixed quote, not a "bring it in and we'll see".

Genuine or OEM-grade (the same manufacturer who supplies the factory line), chosen per project and stated on the quote. Where a quality used genuine part makes sense — clusters, screens — we'll offer it with the component-protection implications explained. What we won't fit is the £30 marketplace special that fails in eighteen months and takes an afternoon of diagnostics with it.

Happily — it's a regular booking. Most arrive with the hardware competently fitted and the integration missing: the camera that never appears, the cruise stalk that does nothing, the towbar that throws bulb-failure warnings. We audit what's installed, complete the coding and configuration, clear the fault history and demonstrate it working. From £50 where it's purely activation work.

OEM retrofits sit in the gentlest category of modification — you're adding factory equipment the car was designed to support. Insurers should still be told (our documentation makes it a one-line declaration), and on warranty cars it's worth noting the addition, though a properly coded factory feature rarely raises dealer eyebrows. It reads as spec, because it is.

Activation-only jobs: under an hour. Cruise control retrofits: typically an hour or two. Cameras and sensor sets: half a day with trim removal done carefully. Bigger projects — clusters, towbar electrics, multi-module work — are quoted with their timescale up front. Parts lead time is usually the longer wait, and we book the fitting once everything's on the shelf.

Sometimes that's the right call, and we'll say so — a dashcam doesn't need OEM integration. But for features you'll use daily, the gap shows: aftermarket kit means extra screens, mystery wiring teed into circuits, no self-diagnosis and a "modified" look at resale. OEM retrofit means the car's own interface, proper fault logging and a feature indistinguishable from factory build. Pay once, properly, is usually cheaper by year three.
