Selective Catalytic Reduction is chemistry on the move: the car injects precise doses of urea solution — AdBlue — into the exhaust, where it converts NOx into nitrogen and water. To police itself it carries NOx sensors before and after the catalyst, temperature sensors, a dosing pump, an injector, heated lines for winter, and a level sender in the tank. Any one of them failing trips the legally-mandated response: warnings, then the countdown, then a car that will not restart.
The diagnostic challenge is that every fault in the chain produces similar symptoms. A downstream NOx sensor reading implausibly looks identical on the dashboard to a genuinely failed catalyst — one is a few hundred pounds, the other well north of a thousand. Crystallised AdBlue around the injector mimics a dead dosing pump. A £40 heater relay can take the whole system down in winter. Replacing parts in dashboard-order is how SCR repairs become legendary bills.
So we work the chain on evidence: live NOx readings upstream and downstream checked for plausibility, dosing commanded and measured, line and heater circuits tested, crystallisation inspected where the data points.
