Focus ST Remap — Mk3, Mk3.5 & Mk4 Stage 1 Guide

The Focus ST has always been the hot hatch for people who buy with their own money — and the factory always left pace on the table. A Focus ST remap typically takes the Mk3's 2.0 EcoBoost from 250 to around 300 bhp, and the Mk4's 2.3 from 280 to around 330 bhp with 500 Nm. This guide covers every ST generation including the diesel, the clutch conversation nobody else starts, and what we check first.

TL;DR

A Focus ST remap is among the best value in hot-hatch tuning: Mk3 2.0 to ~300 bhp, Mk4 2.3 to ~330 bhp / 500 Nm, from £150 at FLR with diagnostics included. The honest catch is the clutch on hard-driven manuals — we load-test before flashing and tell you the truth. Coolant history matters on Mk3-era cars. Engine family background including the wet-belt story on smaller units: EcoBoost remap guide.

The Short Answer

Should you remap your Focus ST? If it is healthy — emphatically yes. Both ST petrol engines are conservative factory calibrations of hardware Ford proves elsewhere at higher outputs: the Mk4's 2.3 EcoBoost is the Mustang's engine working a half-shift, and the Mk3's 2.0 shares architecture with much harder-worked applications. Stage 1 uses that documented headroom — the result is a car that finally delivers what the chassis always promised.

At Finish Line Remaps, Stage 1 from £150 includes diagnostics, a custom-written file for your exact engine, a permanent factory backup and post-flash verification. The sharpest software-only option is Stage 1+ at £180.

Typical Stage 1 Gains by Generation

Figures are typical results on a healthy car; petrol headline figures assume 99 RON. We confirm from your VRN before booking:

ModelStockTypical Stage 1
Mk3 / Mk3.5 ST 2.0 EcoBoost (2012–18)250 bhp / 360 Nm~300 bhp / 460 Nm
Mk3.5 ST TDCi 2.0 diesel185 bhp / 400 Nm~220 bhp / 460 Nm
Mk4 ST 2.3 EcoBoost (2019–)280 bhp / 420 Nm~330 bhp / 500 Nm

The diesel deserves a mention it rarely gets: the ST TDCi at ~220 bhp and 460 Nm is a genuinely rapid real-world car with none of the fuel bills. Diesel facts — DPF, EGR, economy — carry over from our wider diesel guides.

What the Remap Actually Changes

Boost targets, fuelling, ignition timing and the torque limiters that define factory delivery. What you feel: the Mk3's mid-range surge stops tailing off early, the Mk4's low-end softness disappears, and both cars gain the kind of in-gear pace that makes B-road overtakes decisions rather than commitments. Throttle response sharpens everywhere — the overboost window becomes the whole curve instead of a party trick.

The Clutch Conversation — Honest Version

Every ST generation is manual-dominated, and Stage 1 torque is exactly the thing that finds out a worn clutch. On hard-driven Mk3s especially, friction material that copes fine at 360 Nm starts slipping at 460 — usually in fourth or fifth under full load, usually within weeks of the map. So we test before we flash: clutch behaviour under load on the road test, honest verdict before any money changes hands. If it is marginal you get options — fix first, or run a torque-limited map until the clutch is done. Background: clutch health and remapping.

Mk4 automatics are a different story — the 7-speed auto responds well to matched gearbox calibration alongside the engine map, quoted from your reg.

Who Should NOT Remap Their Focus ST

  • Manuals with a clutch already showing slip — fix first, or take a torque-limited map with eyes open.
  • Mk3s with unexplained coolant loss — diagnose before adding heat. Non-negotiable.
  • Cars with active boost or misfire codes — that is what diagnostics from £40 is for.
  • Anyone unwilling to declare the remap to insurance — non-negotiable.

How We Tune a Focus ST at FLR

  1. VRN quote. Registration in, exact engine and gearbox identified, honest expectations and price out.
  2. Diagnostics first. Fault memory, live data, boost behaviour, coolant and carbon assessment, clutch load test. Included with every Stage 1.
  3. Custom calibration. Factory file read and archived for life, then a file written for your engine and your fuel — never a generic download. See custom tuning.
  4. Verification. Post-flash live data, road test, written handover and aftercare advice.

Focus ST Remapping — Common Questions

The Mk3/Mk3.5 2.0 EcoBoost (250 bhp) typically reaches around 300 bhp and 460 Nm; the Mk4 2.3 EcoBoost (280 bhp) typically reaches around 330 bhp and 500 Nm; the ST TDCi diesel typically gains 35–40 bhp. All on healthy standard hardware with 99 RON for the headline petrol figures. We confirm from your registration.

Stage 1 is from £150 at Finish Line Remaps, including diagnostics, a custom-written file, permanent factory backup and post-flash verification. Stage 1+ is £180 for the sharpest software-only calibration.

A healthy one, yes — but the ST clutch question is real, especially on hard-driven Mk3s. Worn friction material slips under Stage 1 torque within weeks, usually in higher gears under full load. We assess clutch behaviour on the road test before flashing and give you the honest answer, including a torque-limited map option if the clutch is marginal.

Yes — the 7-speed automatic Mk4 responds well, and matching the gearbox calibration to the new torque is part of the complete job. We quote engine-plus-gearbox from your registration.

The headline figures assume 99 RON (Shell V-Power, Tesco Momentum). We calibrate for the fuel you actually buy — a 95 RON map is safe but gives up some top-end. The map matching the fuel is one reason custom files beat generic downloads.

Fault memory, live data, boost stability on a road test, coolant system condition (particularly on the Mk3 era), carbon build-up assessment on higher-mileage direct-injection engines, and clutch behaviour under load. Diagnostics is included with every Stage 1 — if the car is not healthy, we tell you before taking your money.

Yes — Stage 1 works within the hardware's genuine limits and keeps every factory protection active. The 2.3 in particular runs the same basic architecture Ford fits to much more powerful applications. Healthy car, custom file, sensible servicing: it dailies as before, just properly rapid.

Yes. A remap is a material modification in the UK and must be declared. Undeclared tuning can invalidate the policy entirely.
